hia all..

attempting to get software to work, things are not going to well.

I attempted to transmit a file from one pc in my home to another in the next room over the lan.. didnt work!..

so i thought may be its the fire walls on the pcs.. so i shut them down.. tryed again and still dint work.

Them i throught may be because the internal ip is set via DHCP on the router, because the ip given to my line would be the same for all the pcs in the house it would therefore confuse the software.

so then I tryed with one computer sending a file to itself accross the lan..

still dint work,

so this time i switched of the software file wall on the pc, and switched off the routers hardware firewall, set the pc as a server (so all ports are forwarded to it and only it) and tryed again!. guess what, that did not work either!!!!.

whats going on here does this software work or what?.

and before any body asks, i did make sure that any virual lans or virtual machines set on the pc, are appropriately configure so that thay dont interfer. still dont work

help!

Hi Alex,

Do you have more than one network card on your computer? If so, please ensure that the primary network card that is used for your LAN is listed as the first network card under the Adapters and Bindings tab of the Network Connections->Advanced Settings menu.

Also do the computers in your LAN share a hub or a switch? Is it wireless or are they wired?

Any additional information would help.

hi paolo

i have allready made sure that the primary card is listed as the first card with all others following after that.

the network is set up like this..
the cable (wan) enters the house connected to a modem, the modem is connected to a wireless netgear router (lan). the router has 4 ethernet sockets. 3 are used up.

ethernet socket 4 is connected to an 8 port switch. from this switch i have 2 pc attached.

the first attempt to get this software to work was tryed from on pc to another was accross from my pc to a pc connected on the 8 port switch with me, that did not work.

the next step was to repeat with another pc, this time the pc was attached to the router directly, that didnt work!.

and finally i tryed from my pc inside the switch to itself, with the pc set with unrestricted access (no firewall) to the internet, and all relivant ports forwarded to it.. that didnt work either..

any help?

Hi Alex,

Is the desktop client connected to our network? Is the connection status LED light "green"? Does your broadband network router forward or filter DNS requests? If so, you might want to turn that off.

Anyway, local LAN file transfers are accomplished using multicast service discovery on port 5252, similar to how MacOSX finds printers and other devices on your LAN. I'm wondering whether or not your router/switch is forwarding the multicast requests. I don't see why it wouldn't but stranger things have happened. I'll try to recreate your setup here to see if I can track down what is wrong.

I apologize for the inconvenience.

My light is green yes

the question of is my router forwarding or filter DNS requests? I dont know? you will have to educate me on that..

and port 5252 would be allowed internal on the lan anyway?.. i dont know...

please help i rearly like this product.. but my universty is wondering weather to continue trying to get this to work.. or weather podmailing is a better solution?..

Hi Alex,

If you can connect to our network then you don't have a DNS filtering problem.

I'm not quite sure what's going on with your installation because LAN transfers work on a very simple mechanism . I might have to simulate your setup here and tinker with it. That will take some time.

We have a new version coming out that may fix this problem but that release is still weeks away. Though I would hate to lose you as a user, I would suggest trying another solution that works for you right now.

im not so sure, the discovery light is flashing, and that indicates DNS filtering. so i have in the past configured the port to allow access, and got a conneted light!

but recently i have upgraded the firmware on my router (netgear RP614v4), and civil netizen will no longer connect at all!.

just continual discovering (flashing yellow), all the time.

im thinking its my router at fault not my pc or software. but again that should not affect internal pc to pc transfers,

anyway back to yet another attempt wish me luck..

Ps. Im very thankfull for your attempts in help, not many would try,, thanks again..

Hi Alex,

Is your client still stuck in the "Discovering" phase? I checked out the Netgear RP614 manual. You might want to disable the SPI Firewall and see if that works out for you. It should be under the WAN Setup Options.

Of course I'll try to help. I'm the developer of Netizen. Your problem, is really my problem.
